5th Grade Novels

May 01, 2007

This will be the 16th year that Mr. Stoecklin has read a wide variety of youth novels to the 5th grade class.  Among those read this year include:

-Maniac Magee - a story about a homeless boy who runs the streets in the early hours, reads any books he can find, and has lived at the zoo in the buffalo pen & in a park storage room!!  One of our favorites!!

-Bridge to Terabithia - about a boy, Jess, and his new friend & neighbor, Leslie.  Their friendship leads to the creation of a special place called 'Terabithia' which allows them to escape from the rigors of the day...but also leads them to a shocking ending!!

-The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe - another of our favorites!!  Story of the Pevensee kids who are living in an old castle during WWII when they stumble upon an old wardrobe that magically transports them to the world of Narnia where they will serve as Kings and Queens, if they can defeat the Witch and her legions!!  Read the book then watch the movie to see if you can find any differences!

-There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom - poor Bradley Chalkers!!  Bradley is the kid that sits in the last seat, last row, has no friends, and has no gold stars on the bulletin board next to his name, AND, plays with his not-real animals in his room!!  But when he meets his new counselor, Carla, and makes a new friend, Jeff, Bradley's world starts to turn around.  We loved this book!!

-Tuck Everlasting - When Winnie Foster discovers the secret of the Tuck family, they take her away from her home!  What is it that the Tuck's can't let anyone find out???  Something that could last 'forever.'

-Where the Red Fern Grows - All Billy Coleman wants is two hound pups....what he gets after hard work and training are the 2 best hunting hounds in the Ozark country!!  Old Dan & Little Ann capture the reader's imagination!!  If you're a dog lover, this is a very emotional read!!  THANKS TO MRS. HANLEY, WE'LL HAVE HARD COVER BOOKS FOR EVERYONE TO USE THIS YEAR!!
