Teachers - Junior High: Beyers, Shelly

How I run my classroom

Grading

Almost every night your child will have a math assignment. Every Friday (or last day of the week) your child will have either a quiz or a chapter test. Quizzes are worth 100 points and tests are worth 200 points.

Corrections (not Pre-Algebra or Algebra)

As soon as your child turns their assignments in, I try to get it graded and returned. Your child will have 2 days after their paper is returned to go back and correct any errors they may have made (look for a date stamped on corrected homework to know when the corrections are due.)  When they turn in their paper for the 2nd time, I re-grade it and put the new grade in my grade book (the old grade is actually erased!) I feel this helps your child learn from his/her mistakes. Any time your child gets a perfect homework paper (1st or 2nd time), they will receive a sticker on a sticker chart. When they fill up their sticker chart (20 stickers), they may staple it to a quiz (5 points) or a test (10 points) for extra credit.

Pre-Algebra and Algebra students are allowed and encouraged to work together and some days we do many of the questions together. Some of their answers are in the back of the book, however, their homework is only worth 10 points.

Assignments

Your child will have a math assignment nearly every night, however, I usually give students at least 15-20 minutes to work on it during class so many of them will finish their assignment before they leave. If you would like to know if your child finished their assignment in class, have them ask me for a note when they turn in their assignment. As long as they remember to ask for the note, I’m more than willing to write a quick note. If you ever have questions concerning grades, an assignment, or anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact me by e-mail or by calling me at school (8:45 – 9:20) at 832-4421 or at home before 9:00 pm at 815-692-2185. Your child should have my phone number written in the front of his/her math book.

Any student caught copying or allowing another student to copy homework from them will receive a 0 on that assignment.
