5th Grade Social Studies Curriculum

Here is a listing of the units/chapters that we cover during our 5th grade year in Social Studies:

Review Unit - Geography - basics using maps, globes, etc.

Chapter 1 - Life in the United States - touching on government & our country's history.

Chapter 2 - Geography of the United States - more detailed than the Review Unit as we travel to the many parts of our country and its 5 regions.

Chapter 3 - Early Peoples of the Western Hemisphere - learn about the Maya, Aztec & the Anasazi of the American SW.

Chapter 4 - Native Americans of North America - we discuss the major tribes of the West, SW, Plains and the Eastern Woodlands.

Chapter 5 - Life in the Eastern Hemisphere - learn about Asian Emperors & Traders, African Kingdoms and the beginning of the Age of Exploration.

Chapter 6 - Contact: East Meets West - Europeans finally make it to the New World.

Chapter 7 - Early European Settlements of North America - successes and failures of Europeans as they attempted to settle this new part of the world and search for the NW Passage.

Chapter 8 - The English Establish 13 Colonies - learn about the New England, Middle & Southern Colonies

Chapter 9 - Life in the 13 Colonies - we talk about the Colonial way of life, their economy & slavery as a business.

Chapter 10 - The Struggle for North America - Europeans fight amongst themselves so they can gain power in North America.

Chapter 11 - Breaking Ties with Great Britain - discuss the events that led to the 'Shots Heard 'Round the World.'

Chapter 12 - The American Revolution - from the Declaration of Independence to the Battle of Yorktown, we'll discuss the colonists fight for freedom.

Chapter 13 - The Constitution of the United States - we take time to study the main articles of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Chapter 14 - A Young United States - growing pains lead to the Louisiana Purchase, and war once again with Great Britain.

Chapter 15 - A Changing Country - the Industrial Revolution makes its way across the Atlantic and war with Mexico changes our border again.

Chapter 16 - The Time of Slavery - study the reasons & disputes involving slavery in the U.S. and the events that led to the Civil War.
